When you first connect Kindle, your books are copied to PC. Thus, your full library is saved on your computer and you can manage it (organize books to collections, sort and search books, update book data and covers, assign ratings). It gives you an opportunity to clean up your Kindle and leave there only few books that you read now. You can always connect Kindle to computer and copy needed books from your PC library to the e-reader.
